I trust you were both encouraged and challenged by Michael's message this past Sunday! As I examine my own life I see just how far short I fall of taking seriously and participating in the work of evangelism / outreach / mission. And because of my own personal shortcoming in that area I'm afraid it has, to some degree, rubbed off on the rest of Community Church. We were reminded from John 4 that "the fields are white for harvest" but as a church we don't seem to spend much time working in the field trying to bring in that harvest. Until Jesus returns God will be bringing people to Himself and it's our joy, privilege, and responsibility to take the gospel to those who don't know Jesus Christ. So I'm asking you to join me in a posture of repentance ... acknowledging the fact about myself that I've been disobedient and have not intentionally sought opportunities to share Christ with others.
But I'd also like to ask you to join me in something else! I'm asking Community Church to actively and intentionally participate in the harvest. This month Community is kicking off an initiative called "Laboring in the Harvest - 2015" and I'm asking you to be a part of it. It's not intended to be a program, but rather a mindset that encourages outreach to unbelievers. Here are some specifics:
- each family unit of CPC prayerfully identifies an unchurched family or individual with whom they can as a family reach out to and share Christ
- this is something that husbands and wives, parents and children would do together - all the way from prayerfully identifying the other family through seeing them involved at CPC (might include hospitality, invitations to worship and/or other events, attend Inquirer's Class with, help them get plugged in at CPC)
- the goal would be to see that family become involved in the life of Community Church by the end of 2015
Again, this isn't intended in any way to be a program that pressures anyone or any family to conform to a certain strategy, plan, or technique. Rather it's something that we're asking you to do as a family ... to help one another and especially your children to see the importance of being intentional in reaching out to those who don't know Jesus Christ. The great benefit of this should be our own personal growth in holiness much more than growing numbers of church membership. Yet it remains true, "the fields are white for harvest" and there are many whom God will call to Himself and who need assimilating into a healthy church family.
Please consider being a part of Harvest 2015. You will be receiving more info in the near future and will be instructed in how you may participate. Right now, just pray and ask our Father if He would have you and your family work together in reaching unbelievers with the Gospel. If you do have questions or would like to help lead in this initiative, please give me a call or shoot me an email.
This Sunday Quinn will be preaching. Pray for him as he prepares. I'd also ask you to pray for me as I have sinus surgery this Friday.
